Hank Haney Golf Instruction – Putting with the Yips

Hello all, today’s post is about putting with what is called “the yips”. Now Hank has written an entire book about this called “Fix the Yips Forever” and goes just a bit into the yips in this video.

For those who don’t know what the yips are, the way I understand it is that it is an involuntary movement that your hands and arms do that rotate the club a little back and forth. It is normally an issue with putting since it is supposed to be a slow and controlled movement and shows much more. I just read that it is supposed to be a condition that affects 33-48% of all golfers at one point of their playing. I think I am fortunate that I don’t think I suffer from this but will lean on these figures in the future to explain any more three putts…

The 100% yip fix is sidesaddle

I actually came upon this term a while back, had to go look for it again. For those who don’t know the definition of a sidesaddle putt is:

A putting stance where the legs and feet are, more or less, facing the hole and the stroke is made to the side of, rather than in front of the body.

Issue with this is that there is much controversy about the legality of it in play. If you are standing in the line even behind the ball you are violating rule 14 and are subject to 2 stroke penalty if the ball is in play.
Naturally, not all of us are playing that seriously I am by no means a rule guy, but if the plan is to progress to that level eventually this may hinder you later on to relearn your stance.
