The other day I was pleasantly surprised to find a little package from Srixon in my mailbox. I was so excited, what was I to find in my special gift pack? Turns out I was the exclusive recipient (or so I thought) of sample packs of Srixon Trispeed and Trispeed Tour golf balls. I immediately packed them up and headed out to my local course.
My objective was to get a feel for three major points on the course: Iron shots, Driver shots and Putting.
First up was the Trispeed Tour ball.
- Driver – Off the driver this ball felt wonderful. It was smooth and not too hard or solid. One thing I really don’t like is when the ball feels like a little rock off the face. This was not the case with the Tour ball it was a little more solid then some other balls I have hit but not rock hard by any means. The distance was great and it felt very comfortable when swung through.
- Irons – I thought the Tour golf ball was a bit hard off the irons. They felt stiff and almost “plastic-y” when hit with the iron, quite the opposite off the driver. I don’t spin the ball much so judging what I had imposed on the ball was difficult. In the end, I was not a fan of the Tour ball with my irons.
- Putting - VERY nice feel. Was almost like hitting a ball of silly putty but was incredibly resilient. The action off the putter was surprisingly well transferred. Something that I would need to get used to since the soft feel makes one think that additional force is necessary.
I do have a gripe about the tour ball though. After the first two holes I noticed the ball was quite badly marred. Not scuffed enough where the cover was peeled back but there was black marking all over the surface. I did not hit into any mud and tried to wash off the ball thinking it was some kind of dirt or something but nothing seemed to help.
Next was the Srixon Trispeed ball.
- Driver – This ball felt very nice off the driver. I much preferred this ball to the tour in the drive. I felt the ball come off the face nice and soft and it just soared. I assume not too much spin and it just felt “right”.
- Irons – Ball came off the irons similar to the driver, it did feel a bit more solid and hard but much better than the tour ball. I really liked the way the ball felt and it seemed to take the spin of the club perfectly. Was not too “clinky” or difficult to feel off the face. Very nice.
- Putter – I thought the ball on the green was not as nice and soft when putting. This is the case where I actually much preferred the Tour ball. When putting, the transfer of energy from the swing seemed to be on the verge of bouncing off the putter face a little too fast for my preference.
The Trispeed ball did not have the same issue as the Tour ball even though it seems that they have the same cover. Still have no idea why the Tour ball went black but I found it a little distracting at the tee.
Keep in mind that my swing at last check was just under 100 mph. All findings above vary drastically by the swing speed and spin imparted.
Let me know your thoughts about the balls, maybe your findings will be different. Would love to hear how you like/dislike them.
